Amniotic fluid embolism or AFE, is a birth complication that can affect ANY pregnant mother.
It is a leading cause of maternal death and suffering and occurs 1 in 40,000 deliveries.
AFE is a life-threatening, acute, and unexpected birth complication that affects both mother and baby. It is believed to be an allergic-like reaction to the exposure of amniotic fluid in the maternal circulatory system (a normally benign effect of birth), which causes the mother to suffer respiratory and cardiac collapse as well as massive and uncontrolled hemorrhaging. It remains a leading cause of maternal death and suffering in the U.S. and abroad.
AFE is unpredictable, unpreventable, and fatal in nature. It knows no bias and affects pregnant women of all races. It is independent of birth order or delivery mechanism. 40-60% of mothers and/or their babies will not survive. Of those that survive, many will be left with significant neurologic impairment or lifelong physical and emotional health complications. Despite these shocking realities, it remains misunderstood and difficult to study.
The AFE Foundation is the ONLY organization dedicated to raising awareness, promoting education, advancing research, and offering support to those affected.
